4 Gauge Vs Carbon Prep Review

Never underestimate the importance of a quality pre workout. The winner of our 4 Gauge vs Carbon Prep review could determine the quality of your session.

If you can’t get motivated enough to push yourself in your workout, and can’t lift those heavy weights, then your post workout shake or stack will not have its desired effect.

That is why we spend so much time studying and testing supplements.

Luckily for you we have two of the pre workouts that have been getting a lot of attention. But which one can claim the bragging rights when it comes to a battle of the best pre workouts?

You want your supplement to do the hard work and make your session easier, this is only achievable if it contains quality ingredients at optimal dosages, so which of these two excels in this area the most?

Right, let’s have a look at the people behind these products.

4 Gauge vs Carbon Prep: Who Makes These Pre Workout Supplements?

Roar Ambition

These guys are a trusted name in the supplement industry. It is difficult to find anything other than glowing reviews for their products as they have some of the most reliable and safest available.

They have a money back guarantee so they believe in their product and also offer free worldwide shipping so they are big on delivering value.

Their products are 100% natural which you really don’t see often in the supplements world, on top of that they don’t seem to produce products that have side effects. A lot of companies create a product that they say is 100% natural. Only to include a dodgy ingredient or two. This is not the case with Roar Ambition.

They never use proprietary blends. This is part of the reason why they have a string of quality endorsements for their products including none other than former Mr. Universe Robby Robinson. Who looking the way he does at 70, is proof that they work.

It took us a while to find what we were looking for on their website but Carbon Prep are a brand under the name of the supplements company BioLayne.

The main function of their site is to support their owner Dr. Layne Norton. Not your ordinary Doctor it would seem. A PhD and pro bodybuilder, he has a string of achievements that are very impressive.

He has converted his knowledge into the supplements industry and although they are a little buried on the website there is some useful information available.

He also does professional seminar touring so he has clearly put those years of studying to use and to top it all off he also has an array of powerlifting achievements and scientific publications. Impressive stuff.

4 Gauge vs Carbon Prep Ingredients

This is where we find out what they are really made of. All supplements claim to do similar things, but they are far from equal.

One thing these two pre workouts have in common is that they do not use proprietary blends. This is something we always like to see and we encourage anyone looking at a supplement to think twice if they see a proprietary blend.

It essentially means you don’t get to see the dosage of every ingredient as a blend is a combination of a handful of ingredients, with only the total dosage of all ingredients under the name of the blend. This means you could be getting a dangerously high dosage of an ingredient. Or a completely ineffective amount.

Thankfully we don’t have to worry about that with these products, so let’s start by looking at the ingredients they have in common and compare dosages.

Mutual Ingredients

Creatine Monohydrate

One of those ingredients that almost needs no introduction, it is a staple in your post workout protein shake, but your muscles will benefit from the repairing properties of this ingredient immediately. It is good in a pre workout because it gives you a boost of strength and maintains your optimal performance levels for longer.

The 1,000 mg included in 4 gauge is sufficient enough to bring you some impressive results but Prep goes a little further by including 3,000 mg. This is good and we would usually give them the benefit of the doubt.

But the inclusion of Astragalus Membranaceus and Creatine together can give unwanted dehydration (more on that later). Therefore we will give this one to 4 Gauge.

Another ingredient that aids your recovery it has its uses without being the most impressive on the bottle. It will help your strength which is good but things like improved mental function are better off in a nootropic. Still, we won’t knock it for being multi-purposed.

4 gauge contains 500 mg which is a decent amount. But Prep has 1,000 mg so we will give them this one.

Rhodiola Rosea

Anything used in Chinese medicine should get your attention and this ingredient has a list of impressive benefits. Its main benefits include the ability to increase focus. This helps when you’re in the gym to stop wasting time in between sets and keep your mind on the task at hand.

It also helps to fight fatigue, ensuring you can still lift those heavy weights towards the end of your workout.

You don’t need a lot of it for it to be effective, so 4 Gauge’s 100 mg will do a good job, as will Preps 180 mg, a close one but we will give them the edge here.

Citrulline Malate

This is becoming more common in pre workouts now and for good reason. A solid ingredient as it is proven to enhance the quality of your pumps and aids the development of the appearance and size of your muscles.

Sourced from watermelons it converts into L-Arginine in your kidneys which allows your body to increase the nitric oxide levels. Great news for your blood flow as the vessels dilate and this is what increases the size of your muscles.

A dosage between 6,000 – 8,000 mg is an effective amount and both include dosages of 6,000 mg.

Individual Ingredients

So, not a lot to split them so far, although the potential side effects of Prep are starting to feel like a concern. Let’s see if they can convince us otherwise but first…

4 Gauge Ingredients

Red Beet

Another great ingredient for increasing blood flow this makes it clear that 4 Gauge are all about increasing the size of your muscles. The extra blood flow is good for anyone looking for the big muscle pumps and this ingredient will also will help you to work harder for a longer period.

It is often thought to increase the level of plasma nitrate in the body. This is good in a pre workout because it gives you more stamina and helps to maintain the intensity of your training for longer.

Caffeine & L-Theanine

These two compliment each other hence why we are discussing them together here.

Caffeine is obviously selected to provide an energy boost, good for when you are trying to get yourself worked up before a hard set. L-theanine is derived from green tea and its function here is most likely to calm the user and give them control.

This means the caffeine doesn’t take over completely and you are still able to focus and stay in control.

Most supplements, particularly pre workouts just go straight in with the caffeine, and let it take over, some even have ridiculously high dosages. 4 Gauge have thought this through clearly.

Carbon Prep Ingredients

Astragalus Membranaceus

A shame as aside from the Creatine and this product combined, Prep was starting to look like a very good product. This ingredient is basically an ancient diuretic and its purpose is to reduce bloating and water retention.

This is fine for your waistline and for getting cut in the gym. Our problem here is that combined with Creatine it could cause dehydration as it encourages your body to go to the toilet more.

This isn’t good when your body is already using water through the creatine to fill those muscles up and increase their size.

Therefore, your body would be better off having more water rather than getting rid of it.

Sure, it has its uses, but at what cost to you?

Alpha GPC

It does have some strength boosting properties, but like with any ingredient, that alone isn’t enough. With pre workouts we like to make sure all the ingredients are also safe to use. Otherwise, we can’t endorse them.

The problem with Alpha GPC is there are many studies that have shown it can cause side effects such as heartburn, dizziness, confusion, rashes and more.

4 Gauge vs Carbon Prep Side Effects

It is no surprise that 4 Gauge has zero side effects since the company behind it are so trustworthy. Their natural ingredients go through a careful selection process so there is nothing you wouldn’t want to see in it.

The same can’t be said about Prep, the inclusion of Alpha GPC and the fact that both Creatine and Astragalus Membranaceus are included means there are a few potential side effects.

The headaches, confusion and skin rash amongst others from Alpha GPC is a concern. As is the potential dehydration risk from creatine and Astragalus Membranaceus.
